I read a short story called "All the Years of Her Life" written by Morley Callaghan. This story is about the unruly boy felt regret of his bad behaviors toward his mother. One night, young Alfred Higgins shoplifted a compact, a lipstick, and two tubes of toothpaste from Mr. Carr's druckstore. Mr. Carr called Alfred's mother and he expected she is confused. However, she was very calm, quiet, and friendly. After Mr. Carr talked with her, Alfred could go back home without go to jail. Later, when he tried to tell his mother how he was great, he saw his mother's hand was shaking and her lips moved nervously. He noticed for the first time that his mother looked very old and he wanted to cry.
I used three strategies called "When text becomes difficult, I pay closer attention to what I am reading", "I try to picture in my mind what I have just read to help me remember what I read", and "When I read, I think about ideas and information in both English and my native language".
I used this strategy, "When text becomes difficult, I pay closer attention to what I am reading", because I confused the sentence of the last paragraph, "The picture of his mother made him want to cry. He felt his youth coming to an end." I could understand the meaning of the sentences through this strategy. It means that Alfred realizes he gets older and becomes an adult.
I used this strategy,"I try to picture in my mind what I have just read to help me remember what I read", because I always forget what I have read. Using this strategy helped me to remember and understand what happen in the story. I draw the picture in my mind about Mrs. Alfred's mother come drug store with calm. I draw it because this mother's characteristic changes this story. From doing this strategy, I can still remember how his mother looked like.
I used this strategy, "When I read, I think about ideas and information in both English and my native language", because I think it is easier to understand the ideas in Japanese. I could understand deeply by using this strategy. Before I used this strategy, I can not get what the sentences mean, but I understand these sentences tells us how Alfred's mother looks different from the mother he saw in drug store.
I predict Alfred would never make crime anymore because he felt sorry for his mother.
